Finding tools in MY Valley

Updated: Mar 18

Recently, I listened a friend preach a powerful sermon about the very familiar Bible story of David and Goliath. In this timeless, and well known account, young David faces the giant Goliath, armed only with a slingshot and five smooth stones he collected from the valley Elah. This image of the valley struck me deeply, as it often symbolizes a low point in life—a place of struggle, depression, doubt, and vulnerability.

In our own lives, we frequently encounter “valley” moments when we feel overwhelmed or defeated. These are the times when we grapple with challenges that can often leave us feeling overwhelmed, I imagine David may have had some similar feelings walking into that battlefield, hearing all those soldiers murmur about the armies of the Philistines and that giant named Goliath. Yet when he heard about how this Giant mocked the God he had served and loved, a fire was lit deep in his belly. David wasn’t your typical soldier, he didn’t have a sword and shield, in fact he had to borrow armor! I digress… I was talking about Valleys… My friend’s message reminded me that these valleys can also be fertile ground for growth and discovery.

Just like young David found his smooth stones in the valley, we too can find the tools we need to confront the giants in our lives during our low points.

God allows us to discover strength, resilience, and victories when we face adversity. In times of hardship, we realize our true capabilities and uncover skills we didn’t even know we had.

The valley is a place of preparation. It’s where we learn valuable lessons about perseverance and faith. In these moments, we might encounter mentors, fellow soldiers, or new insights that equip us to tackle the challenges ahead. David's journey teaches us that what may seem like a disadvantage can actually be a source of strength. The smooth stones he gathered were not just physical tools; they represented his faith and courage to face his fears.

When we reflect on our own experiences in our valleys, we begin to understand that these struggles serve a much greater purpose. They, if we allow them, will lead us to a deeper relationship with God, as we lean on Him for guidance and strength. Our valleys can be a place  where we learn to trust in Jesus, finding peace in the chaos.

As we navigate these valleys, let us remember the lessons from David. Instead of viewing these low points as obstacles and crushing defeat, let us see them as opportunities for growth and transformation. Just like David, we can gather our smooth stones—whether they are skills, insights, or support from others—and prepare ourselves to face whatever “giants” wait ahead of us.

Today, I choose to make the valleys in my life not places of despair; but the very place where I will find tools I need for the battles ahead of me. Thanks to my friend for reminding me that even in my lowest moments, I am never truly alone. God is with us, guiding us to find the strength we carry within, waiting to be unleashed, like a stone from a slingshot, when we need it most.
